After that the animation should start.

Concept & Process
The main animation of the site is based around a series of balloons, so we decided to make all of the drum beats from the sound of balloons. The other main theme is a girl walking around on her own, so we made most of the other sounds from Yoshimi (a girl) doing what she does when she walks around alone, humming and whistling! There is also a small sine tone melody in the middle to kind of give it a mysterious feeling like waiting to hear your fortune.

Sometimes when I am walking around and imagining a song, every other thing I hear seems to somehow fit into it, so I re-pitched all of the sound effects to make them fit with the song too. So the cat and the birds are singing in her head too. The dog sound is from Yoshimi’s parents little dog named Poko,

We were invited to soundtrack it from two awesome studios:
righting and imaginative.
When you have free time you should check out their other good work!

ouchi orchestra exhibition photos and video

Here are some photos and a video of our exhibit and workshop of homemade instruments and illustrations.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
We put up a new track on our myspace.
It's called the bathtime beat.

We've talked before about how we both spend too much time in the bathtub. But, do you know what we do even more than watch TV and read books in there???
Actually the number one thing is make music! Yoshimi hums and I play drums. This new track is all about making nice beats with the tub water. And there is an awesome drum solo towards the end of the song... and underwater recorders too!

Check it out, and please let us know what you think!
And, even better yet, take a soak and make your own melody!

Also, further recommended listening is the water drum hits of my musical heroes The Baka Forest People.

Tour Journal Page 4 - the rest of the West

8/4 Saturday

The next morning we woke up early to an awesome breakfast by Kao.
She made homemade bread and we put nuts and cream cheese and dried fruits on it, which made a really nice color scheme that was only beat by its even better taste. It looked like something out of a magazine like Ku:nel, and tasted even better.

Then we decided to go on a special trip with Kinya, Kao, and Selena, our friend from Tokyo who was back in Portland then. They wanted to take us to the big rock from the super famous movie Goonies. Have you ever seen it?

I was really little when I saw Goonies, so I don't remember anything about it, but apparently this rock was an important part of the story.
Even if I didn't know that, it was obvious that this rock had some sort of star power just like a human. I was the first time I ever noticed charisma in something other than a plant, animal, or human.

But, the main lesson I learned from this was that Oregon's beach is freezing! I thought I was going to turn into a snowman just by dipping my feet in.
Patrick and I decided that since we were there we had to jump all the way in just because. But, Yoshimi, being the awesome smart person she is talked us out of it. I feel a little sorry for her because she has a bit of double duty on this tour as singer and overall mom. She always talks us out of dumb stuff.

Then we saw this statue which Patrick nicknamed "the streaker".

On the way home we stopped Uwajimaya which was heaven for Yoshimi. She really loves Japanese food, and can barely go just one day without eating it. So, she was really craving miso soup and ramen before we found this giant Asian supermarket.
She bought so much ramen, which ended up being useful in the upcoming days.

We also bought the stuff to make homemade gyoza. Gyoza is one of my favorite foods, and I was really excited to have the homemade kind for the first time.

Next to Kinya's house there was an empty field with just one giant tree holding up an amazing tire swing. There was a little guy who was about 7 or so doing some crazy tricks on the swing (like jumping from it onto a mysterious sofa someone must have dumped in the field). Patrick went to talk with him and it turns out he was from France but visiting here with his mom who is an artist. Naturally, she was interested in Patrick's photography, so she let him take a lot of photos. Then the boy taught us some tricks.

Yoshimi and I made up a new one called "extreme tire swing kiss." It is my best trick now.

While we were swinging, Selena and Kao made a flower crown for Yoshimi. And then we took some promo shots in front of a very blue wall.

In the night Kinya rented a robot movie called Short Circuit because it was filmed in Portland. Yoshimi and I had never seen it before, but we were both laughing pretty hard. Afterwards we kept ripping off the line "More input." It was so nerdy I can't believe I am even telling you.

8/5 Sunday

The next morning we woke up early and started the long adventure back to California. We had 2 days off before our next show, so we decided to take the scenic route down the coast. Unfortunately, Patrick was driving for the whole first part of the way and his driving makes us both really sick. So, we had to take a lot of motion sickness medicine which knocked me out and I ended up sleeping through a lot of the most beautiful sights.

We didn't have anywhere to stay so we decided to camp out which was a first for me and Yoshimi. But, luckily, what Patrick lacked in smooth car control, he totally made up for in camping skills! We found a place in the dark and made a little fire and cooked some corn and so much ramen.

8/6 Monday

The next morning we got up early to hit the road to get a little closer to California.

In the morning I made pop tarts with our fire and they weren't nearly as delicious as I remember them being when I was little.

Did my taste buds change that much? I used to love those things, but now they were way too sweet for me.

After a long drive through nothing we found a nice cafe out of the blue. I don't know where we were or what it was called, but they were playing good music and had some hot drinks and a cookie that looked like an octopus.

After driving a little farther we finally made it to the "Avenue of the Giants" which we had been looking forward to the whole day. It has all of the biggest trees I have ever seen! And it smells great. And there were awesome clovers all over the ground. But, it was all too magical and I forgot to take many photos.

Near the forest there was a shallow stream which was warm enough to get into but cool enough to wake us up.

We jumped in, woke up, and drove some more until we could find a place to camp out again. Where we ate more ramen (but still not getting sick of it at all)!

8/7 Tuesday

We woke up again with super tenthead (like bedhead but crazier).

Then we were able to finally drive the last bit of the way back through California with just enough time to drop off Patrick at his sister's house and return our car in San Francisco. That night we were playing at a cool event at a super hip Asian restaurant with our friend's RF and Lili de la Mora.

That night I learned a new phrase, "Hollywood Headlining." It means playing last, but really late on a weeknight. Thanks to all of the people who stuck around for us! You are awesome! And, a lot more people were down watching us go on after midnight on a Tuesday than I expected.

After the show we were beat and hurried back to Ryan (RF)'s house to get some well deserved sleep.

Also, I finally found a sweater that day! I had been freezing every night because I forgot to bring one from Japan. For a while I have been hoping to start a new style theme called "postal" for a lot of different conceptual reasons.

So, I was so excited when I found this USPS sweater.

Unfortunately it was XL sized, but that ended adding to its charm in the end.

8/8 Wednesday

First I should start off telling you about Ryan.
He is a super nice and funny guy. But, also crazy talented and professional. Maybe you caught him at some point on tour with Joanna Newsome. He plays the guitar (among many other instruments)for her.
I hung out with him at various times when he has been in Japan , with Joanna and with his own project Rf. And, almost every time has lead to some type of adventure. For example, the first time we met we snuck into some club only to find out they were having a goth party with a caped DJ and everything! But, we stuck it out and ended up dancing like crazy because it was just then that I remembered that goth kids love the Cure too, and upon request the floor was getting burned up!

So, I was too excited to see what the three days of hanging out would bring.
This was the first time I could see him in America (i.e. not on tour) so it was interesting to see how he works. He doesn't have a normal 9-5 job, but he does some design and developing work from home. So, from the morning he kind of locked himself up in his room and got all of his work done for the day. I need to learn how to do that! During that time Yoshimi and I took a long walk around his neighborhood in Berkley. It is such a beautiful place! There is a huge rock with a beautiful view.

It is on a big hill and just below it we found a super delicious Italian deli where we had a huge lunch to make up for 3 days of ramen . We also finished off a whole bottle of wine which made the long hike back up the hill a little harder than we had hoped.

After we got back Ryan drove us down to Santa Cruz to meet his new girlfriend, Mirandy. I don't know if it was the wine or the hike or both, but we were both exhausted by the time we got there. And, it looked like they needed a little alone time too, so she showed us to the room where we were staying for the night. Yoshimi worked on an illustration for upcoming small exhibit in Portland and I dozed off quick. When I woke up she had made this (theme for the exhibit was to make something about your favorite clothes, so she did it about her raincoat).

8/9 Thursday

It was totally awesome waking up late and well rested at Mirandy's place in Santa Cruz. She has an amazing garden which we raided for food for our breakfast. She gave us some scissors and told us to go cut some stuff to eat. But, since we had both never cut vegetables from a garden before, we weren't exactly sure which ones we could eat at first. But, then we found some spinach, and it was on. I got all up on it like Popeye in need of a fix.
Here is Yoshimi in the garden.

After that we went into town and I found a samba whistle that was red which made my day. Then they took us to the beach which looked beautiful from the cliff.

I decided that if I was ever going to get into the ocean on this trip, it was probably my only chance. So, I stripped down to my undies, bit my lip and fell into the cold waves.

I didn't last long out there though, because it was too cold and I didn't want to get sick.

On the way home, we stopped off for some groceries and bought Santa Cruz Organic Cola which I used to love when I lived in Louisville. But, it tastes even better in Santa Cruz! We ate some more food from the garden, and Yoshimi and I decided that we would have to plant some plants when we got back to Japan (editors note: now we have spinach, basil, rucola, and one tangerine).

For the day's grand finale, I found out that Mirandy is a volunteer firefighter, so she let me wear her uniform when I watered the garden. Awesome!

When we got back to San Francisco in the night Tim's roommate was playing drums at an Afro-disco event in the mission. So we decided to check it out and dance it up. It was fun, but the real highlight was having some burritos afterwards. Mission burritos!

8/10 Friday

In the afternoon we went to visit Sean Talley again at his work. He is really one of my favorite artists so I was so excited to get to hang out with him some many times this trip. Just outside of his work we found Quickly which is a bubble (tapioca ball) milk tea place we go to a lot in Nagoya. It is from Taiwan really, but the one in Nagoya is pretty good too. The one in San Francisco wasn't quite as delicious, but it was still better than nothing. After that Sean took us to some very mysterious pirate store. I don't know who shops here really, but there was a funny quote from David Byrne, one of my heroes, in there. It read "Definitely one of the best pirate stores I have visited recently."
After that we tried to visit the latest art exhibit by Kyle, who is the brother of megamoog, and also the mastermind behind . Unfortunately the gallery was closed, so we had to settle with just peeping through the window.

Then we hiked up a giant hill to Tim's house to have a BBQ.
It was the first time I ever saw anyone make homemade salsa before. Now, it is the only kind I can eat!
And, I mentioned here before that Tim is a furniture builder, so he used some of his scrap wood to build a fire. And then we tried to cook fish on a hinoki (Japanese Cedar) board.

But, it kind of tasted like a bathtub (if you go to Japanese hot springs with outside tubs, they are usually made from hinoki). But, it looked really nice. And, with the proper amount of beer to wash down, it was totally edible!

8/11 Saturday

We missed booked our flight and ended staying on the West Coast an extra day, even though my parents were already in New York waiting for us.
But, since we were stuck in San Francisco, we decided that we should take it slow before going to New York, because we both think that place is crazy.
So Ryan took us to the Golden Gate bridge, which was huge and windy.

Then we visited some small coastal scenic spot across from it where I tried to hop across some rocks in the sea to get to a whale statue for a tourist photo, only to slip in! Luckily Ryan had some flip flops he let me borrow while my shoe dried out.

Finally he dropped us off at the airport where we waited for our overnight flight to New York. We were both excited to see what would happen over there. And, also, of course, excited to see my parents for the first time in a while too!

Tour Journal page 3: tree houses and cops

8/1 Wednesday:

We woke up in the morning and said goodbye to everyone in Patrick's sister's house. Then we head out on the road for our first day of driving. We were headed to Davis, CA which should have been at longest a 2 hour drive. But, overall the trip took us about 7 hours because we stopped so many times to take photos.

We decided to drive up through the Napa and Sonoma Valleys because they are famous for wine and beautiful scenery. The first thing we noticed was this huge chair.

I don't know why it was there. But it was huge!

Around that time we were all starving, so we pulled into the first wine tasting spot we saw that said it also had food. But, we quickly found out that dinner there was $150! So we split before they could get us a table. With bellies moaning we thought we were going to all pass out before we could find any food we could afford. Finally a super nice local told us about an awesome market hidden in like a little neighborhood. We got some super delicious sandwiches there like this chicken salad one:

And, in the front there was a table of free fruit! So we stocked up a little for the rest of our ride. After we drove for about an hour more e found a beautiful lakeside spot to eat our "millions of peaches."

But, the ground was secretly super soggy like quicksand and Yoshimi lost one of flip-flops in it for a bit. But, we could finally recover after a little digging. The bad news for her was that her feet were crazy muddy and gross and there was no clean water around to clean them off, except... the big bottle of water we bought to drink from the market earlier. The only water they had in the super big size was Evian, which was almost as yuppie-ish as the wine tasting we were getting ready to try. So, there was no choice but to sacrifice our drinking water for her clean feet. We decided that cleaning your feet with evian is probably the least tour-like thing an indie band can do, so obviously we must be on level with like the Rolling Stones or something.

After that we drove on a little bit until we found a super beautiful lookout and pulled over:

There was a small secret path that led us to a super hidden bit of lake. The water was so warm and the lake was so beautiful that we had no choice but to strip down and jump in.

It was perfect!

After our swim we realized we were already running behind schedule so we headed quickly to Davis where we played an awesome awesome show at a place called the Delta of Venus. The crowd was so nice and responsive. We made tons of new friends! Thank you Davis and KDVS!

8/2 Thursday

We woke up early and started off on the long long drive to Eugene, Oregon. The "2 hour drive" from SF to Davis took us 8 hours because we stopped so much and swam and stuff, so I was really worried how long the "8 hour drive" to Eugene would take us. Actually though, we did it really quickly! That night we were playing our first house party ever, and when we got the directions there and they included "keeping driving on the street until it becomes a gravel road, and then it is a place that you can't see from the road" we knew it was going to be hype. But... we didn't know that it was going to be the best place ever!

Stonehenge (the name of the house that had the show) is too awesome to even explain! When we pulled in we noticed the super rad 3 story tree house in their yard, so we asked if we could go up there. And they were like "Yeah, I'll grab some beer and the dog. Let's go!" So we took some beer and their dog named Dave, and climbed up there and just relaxed.

Then they were like, "Do you want to see the bike car?" Who wouldn't want to see a bike car? I know you do!

They said they found it at a yard sale for just $2. Then they showed us some of their most extreme tricks. Like bike car off the slope, and two person bike car, and for the finale... two person bike car off the slope!

After that we had a big BBQ with so much good food

and then we went down to the basement to play. We couldn't run our computer sounds through the main PA , so we had to play it through a bass amp, which actually worked OK. The show was really fun. And, after us our friend Eric, a.k.a. DoublePlusGood played a super awesome dance party set that even involved some dancing dogs!

8/3 Friday

We woke up kind of late at Stonehenge

and in the afternoon everyone took us to some natural water slides, which I had never seen before in my life.

They were super fun, but they kind of bruised up our bottoms a little for the drive to Portland.

When we got to Portland, we felt totally strange and country. We had been hanging out in Eugene with no shirts or shoes and sliding in rivers, but we drove straight to the club in Portland where we were playing and it was really urban with techno music and a big sound system and special lights. We quickly re-acclimated though and played a really fun set and met a lot of nice people, our friends Kinya (Mumbleboy) and Kao helped play in our recorder orchestra too.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_U2dKZ12OVWU/RrtE-AVR-wI/AAAAAAAAAAU/Pfg-zjeimi8/s200/1035344195_63d010c632_m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096743235331685122" />

Then after the show, we were carrying our instruments back to our rent-a-car when we saw 25 police standing around it in the parking lot. We didn't have any clue what was going on... Did someone break into it? Was immigration here to take Yoshimi away?

So, we asked one of the guards about it and he replied, "Do you want to get mased? Take one more step and that is what will happen."
What!?
Then another cop ran up,
"Are you the white car, are you the white car?"
"Yes, sir." (being polite to avoid the mase)
"Come with me quick"

So he led us to our car. Some other cops had a coke-head looking woman pinned face down behind it. Apparently, she had just shot somebody, but our car was fine so they let us drive off. It was really really different than peaceful Eugene.

So we drove off to Kinya's house where we stayed. He had a really nice air mattress that we shared with Patrick.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_U2dKZ12OVWU/RrtFvQVR-xI/AAAAAAAAAAc/c9T3yxqOYgI/s200/1036211078_41231be414.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5096744081440242450" />
Super tour mates!

Tour Journal page 2: Free Food Everywhere!

7/30 Monday:

Full of energy from our concert the night before we woke up with an urge to move our bodies. Since it was to early to dance. We decided to take it to the courts for some awesome street ball battles. We hooked up with Patrick's sister's roommate Amanda who is a total player.

On the way to the park we stopped off at a cafe to pick up some breakfast and the guy behind the counter was a familiar face from the night before. His name is Tom and he had come to see our show in San Francisco, and by chance he was also working at the cafe in the park in Oakland. He was super nice and hooked us up with a ton of delicious cookies for free!

Thanks Tom!

Then when we got to the courts, Amanda totally dominated on us. She was like the park bully rejected all of our shots! No wonder she owned a ball already. She was serious! When it came to playing h-o-r-s-e though, all of my wacky shots couldn't be touched. We are editing a video we made of some of our season highlights, so check back soon for the hits!

After that we headed back to the house to where Yoshimi and Patrick rested up for a little bit. But, they had to deal with Kiyoshi, the super scary house cat who loves to scratch you when you are sleeping. He made a funny beard on a napping Patrick with his tail.

And then tried to eat Yoshimi later.

In the night Tim took us to a restaurant called Ponzu, where his super nice friend gave us the total hook-up on crazy delicious food from different parts of Asia.
Thank you!

In the night we caught the last train back to Oakland and randomly ran into Nigel, whose band bear claw we had played with the night before.

I am starting to feel like San Francisco must be a pretty small town to keep running into all of these people. I really like it here!

7/31 Tuesday:

In the morning I cut Patrick's hair which was too dumb looking to deal with anymore. He has only been cutting it himself for a long time which was too apparent.

After that we went downtown to pick up our rent-a-car. The guy at the place was really nice and upgraded to a really nice, really new, super spacious car for free. So we drove it down to The Mission to meet with Sean Talley and Erica at there work, Orange Design. Orange Design is a company that makes educational games for children, and Sean is one of my favorite artists in the world. His blog is definitely the best one I have ever seen. Their office is in the highest building in the Mission district, so the view is incredible.

After that we made about an hour trip out to meet Ryan Germick at the Google Headquarters. You might know Ryan from this video. I heard it has already got more than 5 million hits so far!

Google is crazy! It is like heaven!
They have free blue bikes all around.

And, the food is so delicious (and so free too!) We had artichoke pesto pasta with tons of vegetables, fish, a salad, bread with humus, fried tomatoes, collared greens, soup, and fruit.

And, they even have their own Google ice cream sandwiches too!

And, then we found the best thing ever in one of their many play areas...

a pool full of balls!

I never really thought about search engine preferences before, but now I know my favorite. Thanks google, dinner was delicious!

Tour Journal page 1: Super Start

We are already on our 3rd day here in America. It is so great! Here is a run down of what has been up on the first 2 days.

7/28 Saturday:

Too excited to sleep, we left our house a little before 6 on a morning train to the airport. We took a plane to Korea where we had a 5 hour layover that flew by.
If you ever have to have a layover you should try to do it in Seoul because it is the airport with the most delicious food in the world! We had crazy delicious tofu chige.

Then the airport staff let us borrow a power adaptor for our computer. So we watched a couple episodes of Wonder Showzen we had downloaded from iTunes before we left. It is so funny. But, when we were sitting in the chair in the airport we kept smelling something kind of terrible. At first we thought it was the guy behind us but he got up and left after a while (probably because we were laughing too hard at Wonder Showzen), but the smell stayed! And then we could find the real culprit... the chair Yoshimi was sitting in! It was the stinkiest, BO smelling thing in the world. I wonder who left that smell there? It was almost worse than something any human could do! It was like an elephant sized stink. So, if you do have a layover in Seoul be careful when you choose any seat around gate 22.

So, our flight left around 4 on Saturday afternoon in Korea and we got to San Francisco around noon on Saturday. So it was like we had taken a time machine!
When we got to the airport, our super friend Tim came to pick us up. We first met him when he was touring around Japan as the bassist for Rf. He showed us his wood shop where he is making a lot of furniture. He made his own desk on stool, which you can see here.

Then he took us to the mission where Yoshimi tried her first Burrito ever.
It was so delicious.

The mission seemed like a pretty cool spot too.
After that we went to our best friend Patrick (PatPat)'s sister's house where we are all staying for a few days. It is always so much fun to hang out with Patrick and this time we get to take a road trip with him for a whole month! Road party!

If you don't know about his amazing photography yet, you have to check it out. Him and his girlfriend have a big spread in the newest Vice Magazine, and you can see the photos from it here (maybe not to good to check at work though):
www.viceland.com

In the night we were going to go to see copy and panther play, but the jet-lag caught up with us and we ended up going back home and sleeping at like 11.

7/29 Sunday:

In the morning we went to an awesome farmers market which was perfect for Patrick because these days he is really into this strange farmers hat for some reason.

At the market they had so much fruit we could sample for free, and it was even pretty cheap to buy too. Fruit in Japan is way too expensive. These raspberries were perfect.

Then we randomly ran into Gerald who we knew from Nagoya when he was living there for a while. I guess he is living around Patrick's sister's house now. Crazy!

So, we were eating our fruit by a little stream and there were these cool little kids making boats out of sticks and grass and "putting them to sail" (everything in quotation marks are directly from this 6 year-old's mouth). There were 2 little guys. One was the "builder" and one was the "supplier" (he ran around and picked up broken branches). But, none of the boats made it very far before falling apart so the "supplier" was also in charge of "the museum" which was a big rock they put all of their old broken boats on. This is one of their best boats:

After a while, they offered to let us start the "raft company." Together we owned those seas! But, in the end some grown-up lady told us all of our boats and rafts were clogging up some pipe at the end of the stream. I think she was either just jealous of all of the fun, or an undercover pirate bent on halting our expedition. Oh well.

Then we walked around and saw this:

After that we went back to the house for a BBQ! The weather in San Francisco is perfect for BBQing!

We had to leave the BBQ a little early to head down to the Space Gallery, where we played our first show in America in so long.

I was a little worried how it would go because half of the songs were in Japanese, but everyone seemed super super into. People clapped along, gave us some hoots, and looked overall excited which made us more and more excited and totally killed our jet-lag! Then we sold so many CDs and bags! Thank you so much to everyone who came! And, thanks to the Megamoog (who was awesome for setting up the show) Space Gallery for having us, and giving us free beer. The red stripe really matched Yoshimi's new dress!

At the show, another super friend and future collaborator Sean Talley gave us some fruit and bread which we took home and ate on the porch as a late night dinner

and then we hit the sleeping bags Patrick's mom let us borrow.

Spooning in two separate sleeping bags is pretty funny.

virb + tour ep

We made a new tour ep to sell on tour. I'm a little nervous, much more than I ever am about playing in Japan. These ones say "minimalism is cute" in pink ink. We had to mix our red and white inks for a while to get the perfect pink, but finally we could do it! The only thing is we ended up making way too much of it because we kept adding a little bit more and a little bit more and a little bit more of each color. So, we have to think of some other pink pink things to make soon.

And, during the weekend we went to Yoshimi's parents' beach house with her whole family. It was super fun.
We ate lots and lots of delicious fish, went swimming too much, got way too sun burned, and went to an onsen (Japanese hot spring) and sauna where I hung out with her dad and brothers naked for a long time.
I am crazy lucky to have them as my family.
